Hair loss can affect both your appearance and daily life in significant ways. At AboutSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics, our Board-Certified Dermatologists provide comprehensive evaluation and proven treatments for various types of hair loss conditions. We understand each case requires an individualized approach to achieve the best possible outcomes through evidence-based treatments.

What Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, presents in several forms and can affect both men and women. While some types are temporary, others may be permanent without intervention. Understanding the specific type of hair loss is crucial for developing an effective treatment approach.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Multiple factors can contribute to hair loss, including:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Hormonal changes
  • Medical conditions
  • Medications
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Certain hairstyling practices
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Autoimmune conditions

Common Types of Hair Loss

  • Androgenetic Alopecia: This genetic form of hair loss affects both men and women differently. Men typically experience a receding hairline and crown thinning, while women often notice a widening part and diffuse thinning on the top of the head.
  • Telogen Effluvium: This temporary condition involves excessive shedding that can be triggered by physical or emotional stress, major surgery, serious illness, or childbirth. The shedding typically begins several months after the triggering event and resolves on its own within a few months.
  • Other Types: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that results in patchy hair loss. Traction alopecia develops from tight hairstyling that puts excessive strain on the hair follicles. Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia manifests as a form of scarring hair loss. Discoid lupus is an inflammatory condition that can lead to permanent scarring hair loss if left untreated.

What Hair Loss Treatments Are Available?

At AboutSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics, we offer several advanced treatment options for hair loss. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists will help determine which treatments are most appropriate based on the type and cause of your hair loss.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP therapy harnesses your body’s natural healing abilities to promote hair growth. During treatment, blood is drawn and processed to concentrate platelets containing growth factors. These concentrated platelets are then injected into areas of thinning hair to stimulate the hair follicles and encourage new growth.

Intralesional Kenalog

For patients with alopecia areata, intralesional Kenalog (steroid injections) can effectively reduce inflammation around hair follicles. This treatment involves carefully placed injections of triamcinolone acetonide into affected areas to help suppress the immune response and promote regrowth.

Oral Medications

Several prescription medications can address hair loss, particularly for male- and female-pattern hair loss:

  • Spironolactone may be prescribed to women with androgenic alopecia to help block the effects of androgens on hair follicles.
  • Finasteride works by inhibiting DHT production in men with male-pattern hair loss.
  • Oral minoxidil can increase blood flow to hair follicles in both men and women who have not responded adequately to topical treatments.

Keralase™

This noninvasive treatment combines laser therapy with specialized growth factor serums. The laser creates microscopic channels in the scalp to enhance absorption of KeraFactor® serum, which contains proteins and growth factors that support hair follicle health.
